PostSubject: Following the Thread, Part 1   Thu Feb 02, 2017 10:16 pm

She had made it out with the crowd that pivotal evening, slipping out with a crowd and covered by the hooded and thick black fur cloak. As soon as she had crossed the bridge into the greater part of the city she paused to twist the gold latticework ring thrice around and activating it as she had done a few times before. A rim of gold circled her blue irises as it was awakened and she stood with her hand out delicately touching the gold line only she could see as if it were railing.

This was what she had escaped for. This is what she was setting out to do, and she needed to cover as much ground as she could possibly muster. A glance over her shoulder at her family's grand estate and the acreage she had already put behind her: they would be in panic when they got her up in the morning. Regret was already setting in... how would this fare on the city around her? Are all the guilds going to be on the look out for her? There was no other way around it, however. Years she had expressed desire to go see the other states, to be guest at each guild hall and see their locales with her own eyes. Then that fall in the garden and she was even more tightly confined. The Skald was urging this, she could feel it in the ring and the pull as it desired to coast along the gold thread that she followed now.

She moved quickly down the empty and maze like streets, keeping in plain view and pausing constantly as she tried to keep her bearings in a city she had never stepped foot in before. It was massive, and the hills made finding her way all the more uncertain. She only needed to follow the thread, but as she already knew-- sometimes it wanted her to go through walls, and in those cases she would have to find her way around them. Twice she discovered a dead end, much to her chagrin, her eyes constantly shoulder-checking and gauging the sky for time.

The princess needed out of the city by daybreak, that was all she knew. It was all she had prepared for.

As she reached the markets, all of the shops closed but not all of them necessarily empty, she started pondering the selling of her stowed away collection in order to obtain currency for food and protections, perhaps a ride. Further she'd trade clothes for something more common, realizing that the Militancy's coat of arms on her shoulder was likely to get noticed at one point or another. Then again, wasn't that supposed to be part of her cover? A guild member en route? Pale lips found themselves chewed upon by pearly teeth, her brow furrowing as things suddenly got much more real and much more difficult. She exhaled. She just has to make it to the next spot of civilization, then she can try to take the load off.

She pushed onward, her posture betraying her had there been any around to spot her as she moved effortlessly on wedged heels, her shoulders back and head up disguised only by the fur-lined hood. She was almost out of here. The streets being so vastly empty-- the others on the road also seeking home after they had their fill of mingling and enjoying the colors that still snaked across the sky-- made it rather easy to cover ground, especially where there would have been a barrage of people, such as here in the markets. Focus, she need only focus, not too much farther now.

But she hungered. The paltry appetizers only served to absorb the champagne she had sipped earlier and nothing more. Many missed a day or two's meal, she could experience the same, she fussed internally. Eyes to the sky. Red started to bleed in... she had no time to lose, stopping for a meal was out of the question. In fact, she wasn't going to get far enough out in the world before the sun rose completely and she'll be caught at this rate just miles from the city. Marietta abandoned her string-quest to follow her nose to the stables of a tavern.

Large carnivorous birds strapped tightly with tack and contained carefully, horses less so stood in the corners of their stalls asleep. There were even large quadruped lizards curled up in a pile, sharing warmth. The latter were useless in these colder months, so sluggish and unresponsive. A horse was universal choice... though finicky and she had to admit to herself that riding was not exactly a skill set she had been promised. She would go for one of the feathered raptors, as they were fully prepped and she need only remove them from their pens. They screeched and hissed as she got near, which made her acutely aware of their teeth and long talons.

"Silence," she barked back, but of course that didn't work. In her left hand she sparked up a flame, frightening the bird from snapping at her a second time. Marietta's heart racing as she dared to continue, right hand snatching at the rein that dangled from the beast's head and neck. At least she had it, not that this would keep it from launching at her as soon as the fire was out and she very well couldn't mount it with one hand. How was she even supposed to get up there? Knock its knees til it went down? A step stool?

She backed the creature up against the fencing, which it was inclined to do so to flee from the fire in her grip. Once it was out though, it resumed being unruly... and she leaped on it like a cowboy trying to transition from bull to partner's horse when her eight seconds were up. Only she had never done any of those things and found herself riding this creature on her belly, squeezing her knees and elbows into its sides. The only thing protecting her from it turning its neck back and biting her as she sat behind its winged arms was the shields built into the saddle to prevent such attacks on the rider's legs.

This was a terrible situation. She now officially hated birds.

It tore out of the stable, knocking her into things as it went and she constantly trying to dodge and use the knee guards to turn herself around on its back, to try and not look like some damsel in distress who had been flung over the back of a pack animal that ran off. She was not going to touch that ground though, not at this speed.... as long as it didn't make any sudden turns she'd make it upright.

She made it out of the city with no time to spare, and was in fact still behind in her ideal schedule. Astride the feathered raptor she reached an understanding with the creature, figuring out how to keep it going in the direction she wanted. A large part of her staying on however was due in greater part to the knee guards and high pommel and cantle that kept her rather secure. The iron stirrups bounced with her imbalance and improper seat, however, which only agitated and spurred the carnivorous bird on. She yanked the chain connected to the ridge of its beak, just under its eyes, to get it to turn and adjust how aligned to the gold thread she was blazing a trail by.

This meant she would forgo most roads, cutting straight across fields be it grass or crop, hill or dale. In her mind a straight line like this will make her less lost... but it rather made things more so when she found herself impassible. She wasn't sure where the nearest town was, or if she had traveled far enough to brave a stop in the first place.

A glance back over her shoulder showed no lights. The way before her was dark as well, the bright and shiny gold string reaching endlessly forward did nothing to light even the blades of grass it snaked through. This light was only for her, painted out of place and leading her to only Skald knew where and what for.

The princess was fully aware of her mishandling of this plan. She had made sure she was equipped with clothes and something to trade with... but weapons she lacked, and the ability to use the weapons effectively would have also been lacking. There was no map, she had no idea what city state she was headed toward or what she would do when she got there. If she didn't get there too soon she could likely starve as well as she never needed to know how to hunt, trap, skin, or cook. She swallowed as the reality continued to set in. Her creature had slowed, its stamina waning for the moment.

Her head swiveled left and right, desperately looking for sign of a city.

By the time the sky had been painted rich with morning rays, Marietta was slumped in the saddle, the raptor moving at a more casual pace and in its own direction. She yawned repeatedly until tears squeezed from her eyes as she sat up and looked around again. Finding a place to stop had not been very successful and any roads would be still well traveled to most places in her kingdom despite the season. She turned the creature left and up a hill for a better vantage point.

The area around Inizio D'Oro was hilly, but plain... with those iconic Italian cypress marking where roads were or plantation type homes of those who had claimed the area for fields of sunflowers or grapes or whatever-- she wasn't entirely sure outside of what she had read and been told. On stopping the bird lowered itself to nest for a while. "No! Get up!" She flailed her legs trying to agitate it in the most awkward of manners, as she was practically standing astride this massive creature with her feet touching the ground. It emitted a frightening mix of hiss and growl at her before rising to its feet again. "I will stop when actual shelter is found..."

A very impractical thought.... many of the travelers on the road had tents among their wares for the long journeys between towns where there was nothing to shelter them. Something Marietta couldn't even imagine at this stage in her life and would have to accept as fitfully as a child in time-out. Unhappy, but putting up with it because it was going to a battle she was going to lose otherwise. Asking or paying for one of these tuscan style houses was a risk she wanted to avoid, hoping to get into a whole new architectural region before she stopped, which was frankly another impractical desire of hers.

Blue eyes rimmed in gold saw the line of five cypress trees and the dots of one or two groups moving bodies on the road they were planted near. A wiggling kick and down the hill the bipedal mount carried her, to join the trickle of people... and hoping the road eventually curled a little more certainly toward her unseen goal. This way too, she might have a chance at bartering for food on the way. The raptor was agitated, and hungry, but so was she.

As she approached a small group of people on the road she came to a particular realization, something she should have realized when she had met Aleksandr at the party-- not everyone dressed up for the occasion, not everyone participated in that party, though it certainly felt like it when you had to stand there and greet every single one of them. Though her garb was mix-and-match between the militant coat and her regal corset it was still far richer than any of these backpackers'.

She would have been better off in her night gown.

Marietta slowed the feathered beast as she bought herself some time to decide on how to make her approach. Surely she'd be realized for who she were, and she should be honest, perhaps use her status to get her an idea of where she was going, perhaps some food. It was still early enough that she doubted there was any mass hysteria looking for her, if there would be at all. She wasn't too sure if her lack of presence would actually do anything to stop the process of The Review. A king does not need a queen to be crowned as such. Her father need only select someone.

The line of her blood, however. That would be the only suffering... years of meticulous selection wasted on her simply running out of the door. Guilt set in for a brief moment, but when she saw the gold line before her, she renewed her resolve to see it to the end. The Skald wants her to do this, right? They could not fault her, they should praise her as chosen!

But there was also all those dangers being cooped up was supposed to prevent. Where there was power, there was opposition no matter how great the rule. Aware of the possibilities, she was confident she could overcome them. Threaten to feed them to the bird, maybe? The fire ever at her disposal, magic coursing through her giving her that beautiful afterglow tingle whenever she called upon it. She would be fine, no matter what she did. Or so she told herself. That and, when she was queen, the roads would have more sign posts.

Now, what was the proper greeting? She normally was not the one to start the conversation, and the conversations she did partake in were heavily courted. She was on them now, and a decision was made: "Well met, this frosty morning. Where does this road lead? I have found myself turned around with a misjudged short cut, I fear."

Absolutely out of place, her words came out like an unedited speech and she felt herself a fool on the pedestal. Whatever their initial thoughts on her, they answered her as effectively as she could have hoped. One direction lay the maker's and the way back lead to the inaccessible singer's isolation. That at least told her the only way she could go was to continue with this group and use them as cover. If any were looking for her at all, they might assume she traveled alone. She looked out across the field this road cut through, painted white with frost and snow. Chanson Isolee's surrounding waters had risen over the road and therefore there was no to or from there. It didn't make much sense given the existence of boats. Playing with the silk lining of her hood she pressed, her voice an indicator of her breeding, rich with a presence and money that came effortlessly to her to the point she hadn't even considered it something that could mark her. "Is sailing forbidden? Why not build up the roads if the waters rise to the same point?"

The journeymen blinked in relative unison, making her realize that she had either asked a very silly question, or managed to state something so obvious that they were embarrassed for over a hundred years of failing to see the forest for the trees. They certainly saw her as a stranger now, she determined with relief, her seat shifting as her tail bone strained as it became more aware of the fact that the saddle was wood and metal wrapped in sturdy leather. Her thighs hurt a little as well, she realized, from all the riding done so far-- a thousand more than she ever had in her life. "Well? Does no one have an answer?"

"Well it is true there are boats, but its not as though they have a massive dock. The place is made to be like a fortress, so long as the waters are up, they cannot be invaded in any way. They have a small fleet of fishermen who get lifted up and down from the walls but its hardly something that can handle a lot of traffic. Besides, in the winter there is not as much trade happening anyway... traditions stick."

Marietta wasn't sure that was a satisfactory answer but it gave enough. She could decide to go to Chanson Isolee, perhaps pay a fisherman to take her back with them, and then she could be guaranteed safety for the rest of the season at least. The thread wanted her to go there, too. "I see..."

She fell back a bit, prompting them to ask her if she really planned on going toward Chanson Isolee at this time of year. "If the Skald writes it," she mumbled before turning the bird around and spurring it to run down the road and completely forgetting that she needed to barter food off of them if she was going to make it there.

Marietta could not recall a time she had made such terrible decisions. She should be playing the political field and changing it from the inside. She could make them burn slowly as the fire she held cupped to her chest in attempt to stay warm. Night had fallen by the time she reached the top of a far hill over looking what she assumed to be Chanson Isole'e surrounded by cold and dark water. She was freezing and the wind was not at all discouraged by the heavy cloak she had commandeered from the militancy. Her pale features whispered hints of a bluish purple on her lips, conflicting with the brighter shade of her eyes and the orange glow from the flame in her gloved palms. The raptor shook underneath her, causing her lose the fire and cling tightly to the pommel of the saddle to ride it out as it fluffed up its feathers, the airspace between the gray down offering it a layer of comfort she could only be jealous of right now.

There was no sign of boats, and the distance too far to shout. Swimming was out of question for a few reasons. Her fingers curled around the leather reins and jerked the raptor to the right in a one-eighty to head back toward Uhrwerkstadt and its far more accessible shelter, food, and warmth. A kick of her heels had the mount tread forward on scaled talons, heading back down the hill to the path from whence they came. It was getting antsy, gold banded eyes taking note of movements in bushes as it hungered and sought unlucky prey.
