PostSubject: [Event] Virtuoso's Gala   Sat Dec 24, 2016 3:08 am

[Begins Jan 1st 2017]

A ribbon of tranquil colors is apparent in the night sky, like paint still swirling and spreading in water applied to parchment. There is an ethereal glow about it, as though lit internally like any other of the celestial bodies above you and it steadily seems to migrate, though you've yet to see its start or its end. The world seems darker, as many inhabitants of the capital city have blown out all torches to better relish this phenomenon. Many are in their best clothes and attending the revelry at the royal manor, as the gates on both sides of the bridge are open as the Prima Familia celebrate the start of a new year with their citizens and patrons.

Should you join the party, you'll be delighted to endless and rather filling hor d'oeuvres brought around on gold platters by servants dressed in the colors of the Familia: black and gold. For drinks the favorite seem to be wine and champagne, both of which are served in flutes of hand blown glass from the city's artists with colorful pulled stems. A pop-up bar has been provided for artisanal meads, with a few classy liquors selected to give that burning warmth in this winter season that you can enjoy while standing at tall tables draped in black cloth with simple center pieces of leaves dipped in gold and set with a candle for light and warmth. The few chairs and benches available are strewn along the edges of pathways of the garden courtyard.

The garden courtyard, like much of the city has the minimum lighting to better enjoy the borealis, or what they call 'song coil'. Small candles floating in bowls of water line the oyster shell pathways for safety in footing. The snow on the ground just adds to the brilliance of the natural light above, reflecting glittering rainbows just in the peripheral of your vision.

You'll find that many are attending, with very few spots available for privacy. Lovers uniting under the colored bands in the sky would have to find elsewhere in the city and skip the party to do so. Of course in such a crowd, few would care to notice the pairings as they gather at the standing tables or sat on benches together. Most are more inclined to try and 'rub elbows' with the Prima Familia, whom are set up on a low platform built for the occasion to receive each attendant personally, as they would please. Occasionally the hosts will leave the platform to mingle, ever surrounded by their personal following of lower nobility that act as their valets.

Unlike normal, there are guards present here. Two groups of six patrol the path and two at each entrance, as while the courtyard is free to roam, the house itself is off limits.

The party will go on until all have left to escape the cold or turn in, or when the coil leaves as the sky turns to morning.

This was just another of those functions that required her presence. She didn't mind being a creature of attention most of the time, born and bred to shimmer and glow in an untouchable way. Though it did irritate and bore her, if only because the attention she received was rather unsatisfactory. She had become disenchanted, the cloistering from the worry of her health only amplified the status of her life.

Marietta stifled the thoughts as she stepped out into the vast courtyard where the party was held. Rather than the striking black or midnight blue fabrics and lace she was normally seen in, proudly wearing the colors of Inizio D'Oro-- black and gold, tonight was a grand occasion larger than their city, more concerned with the whole of the Great Skald's work. Thus today she was more ghostly in design, nearly completely white from her hair and skin to the pearl-silk dress itself which shimmered with an iridescent layer of gossamer tulle. Her winter-blue eyes and the dainty cuff-like crown on her head marking the only bold colors. White mink fur lined the top of her bodice and shoulders to give her the illusion of warmth. She'd reflect the beautiful watercolor of the Coil quite nicely.

The beginning of the event was like any other, she stood tirelessly with her family and welcomed each peasant that came up to pay respects, watching the visiting guild leaders kiss her father's rings. It was a little annoying to see the members of the court in that line, but she was unable to express that opinion beyond the sharp look in her eyes alone. Overkill on the kiss-up, she thought. Her eyes closed and slowly opened with a tilt of her head as she 'thanked' a servant for bringing her a flute of gold champagne and then took a moment after the first sip to admire the unique stem of the hand-spun glass. The servant had brought her one that was blue like her eyes-- her favorite color, as vain as that would be.

He didn't really feel like this was his kind of place, it seemed too... High society for him. He recognised people from around town, but they were all dressed up for the occasion, and he had only the most functional of clothing, having no fashion sense, and no money to spend on finely tailored clothing, even if he had the desire to do so. But of course he was here, because the shorter, garishly dressed Asphodel had made him come along, and was almost leading him around like a pet at this point while also commandeering any champagne he happened to come across. The old man certainly was garrulous, that was for sure, watching as he breezed away to go talk to someone else - another merchant, Aleksandr thought. Yes, somewhere underneath the colourful clothing, that was a merchant he dealt with now and again.

Well, while he had the chance, Aleksandr drifted along, and secured himself some of that mead that was available, and contemplatively ate the various food stuffs that were on offer. If he liked anything about this situation, it was the food, it was all very good, although that was to be expected from the people with all the money around here. He looked around for a little while, and realised that he didn't really actually know anyone all that well - he talked to people in passing, as he did his job, but he didn't really have personal connections to anyone. Of course the old man had been telling him that for a while now, but it hadn't really sank in until he was stood in this sea of people, and feeling slightly adrift.

PostSubject: Re: [Event] Virtuoso's Gala   Mon Jan 02, 2017 11:57 pm

When the time came for a break she excused herself with a curtsy performed not unlike the opening of a flower's bud, her fingers gently entangled in the tulle and silk of her gown and pulling it aside, pinkies out and her head bowed and tilted to give herself an image of innocence and sweetness. She had given away her champagne glass a while back, and with the arrival of her coterie she took her leave to make a social round of the garden. Even breaks were part of a tireless work of creating and keeping an image. They were the crown of the world, she would have to continue meeting their expectations for it. One of the eager-to-impress noblesse offered his hand to help her down the steps of the platform.

She stared him down before submitting, sliding her fingers over his gloved palm with the most minimal of connection as she otherwise helped herself down to the crushed shell path and took back her hand. She lead the flock of rich-blooded ladies, four in all, to start their secondary work... and secretly scout potential pathways for escape. The gates to the bridge, to the city, were open. She could just leave. But it would cause a great deal of trouble, something that held her back each time so far.

Another flute of bubbly found its way into her hand while she patrolled with the ladies, their path opened by the freezing respect of bows of those lesser than them. Her eyes skimmed the crowds as they passed, noting the little flickers of fire in their persons. All small and average, a little active in the gaiety of the night. That was good, at least, she supposed... as long as their flame had not gone stagnant then the world around them will prosper. She sipped from her glass during a pause in the walk, listening to the gaggle behind her and chiming in when they tried to pull her into friendly, but tiresome, conversation.

"The coil is vibrant this year..."

"A good thing that it is." Marietta nodded with a choreographed bat of her eyes before speaking up, the money in her voice and the recited teachings coming as easy as a rehearsal. A few commoners sidling up to hear her response as if she were speaking the word of the world. As if the Prima Familia had a direct line of communication with the Great Skald this was all in honor of. "The amount of color in the band tells us the future holds many paths. The depth expresses that these paths will take vast effort, but the vibrancy; how bright our sky is this night, promises the most important thing of all: the change will affect us all."

Realizing her audience she smirked to herself, realizing how easy it would be to manipulate the populace around her at this point. If her father was watching now he'd be impressed. He would also add something inspirational for them to take home, a little something to boost the productivity of their nation. Something like... "May we all work hard enough to entice the gaze of The Great Skald."

With that she stepped off again, keeping the train moving. She only had a little bit before she would be due back on the platform to continue being gawked at in a more stationary location and she wanted to case out as much of her options as she could before then. Plotting and planning kept her mind occupied... whether she acted on it or not. Enticing the gaze of their creator, something she was going to do one way or another. The ring promised her something, and she was going to find it. The creator in question had given her multiple tools for the potential of an adventure... that fire she bottled within, the fire she could see in others. Something was being set up for her. By glory or by witness.

He watched the crowds for a while, people watching to get a feel for what was going on, and maybe see about doing something about this state of isolation he had accidentally inflicted upon himself. He had seen a few people that seemed like he could insinuate themselves in to their presence, and had stepped forwards from the periphery of the crowd to do just that. At that point however, he was joined again by the impossibly garrulous Asphodel, who slid up next to Aleksandr with a grace that was almost uncanny for one of his age, and steered Aleksandr off in a different direction, causing the larger man to blink softly as he was man-handled like a child by the eccentric old man.

"Nonsense, Aleksandr, nonsense. That's not what the Skald has in mind for you. Chattering with the mayflies, nonsense. If you live long enough you too will start to see the staves, albeit not the music. Something is afoot, yes."

The words had a weird musical tone to them, which made Aleksandr cease complaint before he started, drifting along with the old man akin to a lost child being pulled along to find their parents. What happened instead, was that the old man pulled him straight across the path of one of Marietta's gaggle of sycophants, a collective 'oof' from numerous parties, Aleksandr included. Asphodel blinked owlishly for a few moments, and regarded them all with that strange, razor-sharp eye that Aleksandr had sometimes seen, causing a vague sense of unease - that crafty look was always bad for the other merchants, and Aleksandr felt like he had just invested in something without knowing it.

"Oh dear, the lovely daughter of the crown. You must forgive me and my attendant, both for bumping in to you, and for being opportunistic in saying you indeed look lovely this evening. You have an air of auspice around you, my sweet, yes, quite so. If it would please you, I would loan you the service of my attendant for a time. He is quiet and very able bodied, that might be useful to you, hmmmm? Perhaps I will go and occupy your father, it has been a while since he and I spoke..."

Aleksandr stood there aghast at the whole situation, barely managing to keep his composure in front of the daughter of the ruling house and her mob of attending... Whatever they were. And then, Asphodel just bobbed away in to the crowd, shanghaiing another fluted glass of champagne as he bimbled off to go do whatever it was the old man did when he wasn't assaulting people with his peculiar presence. Aleksandr swallowed and looked at Marietta only briefly, assuming anything else would be considered audacity - she was lovely in that token way that the rich were, a cookie cutter kind of beauty that was furnished with gold and gems.

"It would seem I am at your disposal, Prima Figlia."

They buzzed around her like the flower she was meant to be, manipulating her like some pose able doll as they attended to the results of the collision. The flute of champagne had been taken away, her hand wiped down from the spillage and her dress dabbed by various handkerchiefs, assured that the colored liquid would blend finely with the shimmer of color hidden in there and no one would be the wiser. Marietta tuned them all out as she stared down the old man and his tide-swept companion, judging them and the inner flame nesting at their core.

Lucky for either of them she was accompanied by only the female nobility. Any of the men in their obnoxious attempt to impress her, as if her opinion mattered in the selection of the next branch to be grafted onto her family tree. The government of the tapestry was simple but turbulent and promised a change at any level of civilized life. A person could gain influence by heading a union. Immediately his status higher than that of the common. To rise again the union would need to claim the seat of a settlement. At that point he is already at the steps of the throne... the last obstacle is to gain the favor of the king and be welcomed into the family.

Her father explained it to her as a way to eternally reward good work and ensured that someone with experience always succeeded the throne. It also honored The Great Skald by inspiring the ordinary to become extraordinary, to make heroes out of the common folk without expecting them to go out and find some grand storybook adventure. That even the pig-keeper can wear a crown someday. Of course... there was much more to the social structure than that when it came to what determined the true and old blood and the new. She, proudly, was of old. It was through her that the line would persist.

With her body hers again she stood poised and proper, her expression hadn't changed through the fuss, be it the displeasure of being bumped into literally or the bombardment of flattery as she was prone to listening. While she did have a groomed amount of vanity to her personality, listening to people compliment her quickly became the same level of droning as a mosquito by her ear. Her attention remained on the quirky merchant, it was her duty at this party to engage with those who wanted to speak with her this night. "It is the night of the Coil," she started. "Alas I have no use of any extra attendant. This night. As tonight is one of revelry for our Skald... an-."

Annnnnnd her pause took too long and he thought he was free-- he was off to be with her father, likely to engage him in casual business. Her eyes darted to the left corner, looking behind her without even shifting her head. She could hear the mumbling behind her and she shut up those traps with a rise of her fingers. This same gesture meant many things, and this round it meant 'halt'. A pause, seeing if they were paying well attention as she gave hers to the abandoned sucker avoiding gazing at her as if he'd be whipped for it later. "I should perhaps put you to some use. Fetch me another drink, to replace the one spilled by your incomprehensible rush."

A pause. "You will not become stone, eyes on me. Your name?

He felt deeply uncomfortable with this situation, and he got the impression that he could have been of only slightly more worth alive than dead right now - alive at least, he could get out of her sight. The thought made him resentful, boiling up from somewhere that he couldn't articulate, especially as she resigned herself to 'putting him to some use', his gaze meeting hers. Her eyes were an indifferent, icy blue as far as he could tell, contrasted by his own brown eyes, which betrayed the only sign of his resentment and strongly felt, if poorly presented defiance. He wouldn't become stone, but he wished that she would, or at least the old man would for putting him in this position.

"Aleksandr... I don't remember my surname."

Once given the opportunity to do so, he would go and fetch that drink she wanted, his hand wrapping around the stem of the fluted glass and squeezing with just enough pressure to avoid breaking the neck of it entirely. Returning with the glass, he held it by the very bottom, just above the base, and extended it for her to take. He disliked this intensely, feeling incredibly out of place, and somehow judged for it too, as he was not here with a ridiculous surplus of money and fashionable attire (or even any money at all, or much in the way of attire). He struggled to articulate where some of this sentiment came from, but couldn't, putting it down to the awkwardness and unexpected nature of the situation he had been lumbered with.

As far as she was concerned, she already was stone. She had been described as such from the tight expression on her smooth face, that pale skin of something near alabaster. Her 'companions' and 'suitors' would all agree that she was stoic in expression most of the time, giving her a nickname they wouldn't dare speak of to her directly. She was indeed judging them all, regarding the flames in each as she thirsted for some unique and driven little spark that could be fanned into something wild. Hers was hot in her breast, cooking her from the inside while she remained bound by organza and damask.

She knew her place. It was not a place for such fire.

"No surname..." Her interest piqued, shown only from the even rise of her brow. She looked him up and down again in his insulting work clothes. There were a few reasons someone could lack a surname. Perhaps he was cast out of his family, deemed unfit to pass it on. Though he claimed it was a failure to remember, suggesting perhaps that he were covering it up, or had suffered trauma or spell. She bought herself time to think by letting him fetch the refreshed glass, taking it daintily from him with all the grace he could expect of her. While she didn't voice it she had thanked him, in the form of that perfect forward tilt of her head she had given anyone else around her.

The gaggle behind her were displeased, clearly having been exchanging and whispering words to her while he was away. A stranger handing her something, it was insulting to them and she continued to ignore it. To some extent, she could do as she pleased and they would do well to remember that. There were plenty of witnesses if he stupidly poisoned her at a public affair. But she didn't ask him for the drink to drink it...

"Are you," she paused as if choosing her words out of the myriad of colloquialisms that the people had created, "written by the Skald?"

"No surname."

He repeated it because she had, and if they were going to state things at each other, then he may as well join in and make absolutely sure there was no ambiguity about the matter that he did, indeed, not remember his surname. There was a long, pregnant pause and as he had nothing to do but wait on her to say or do something, or tell him to do the same, he mostly just examined her mob, all of whom seemed less than enthused with his presence right about now. Not that he cared, or could do much about it really, save for feeling that bit more uncomfortable about this whole mess. Finally the princess spoke again, and he considered how to answer, as he wasn't really sure how to answer that.

"If that's what happens when people just.. Appear here, then yes, Prima Figlia. I woke up out in the woods and wandered around for a while. One of old man Asphodel's carts found me, and he happened to be in a carriage with it. He took me in and said the Skald had something for me to do, and has been harping on about it since... Talking about signs and portents. I work for him to repay him for giving me food and shelter. I know my first name, and very little else...Nothing from 'before'... Whatever that might have been."

"So you do," she remarked and allowed her attention to drift to the sky, tilting her face up to gaze at the stream. It seemed appropriate, given the subject. "The Skald collects the worthy. You must have done great things and will do many more, should you desire."

Her eyes met his again as piercing as they had always been, a formidable mix of trust and limitless expectation. She was not in any way ordering him to become a hero of the ages despite what it sounded like. Despite the impression she gave off, she continued the conversation almost pleasantly. "How long since your awakening, Aleksandr? You have a grasp of appellations but seemingly none for the formalities of proper wear."

Of course she would bring up his clothes. She placed the fault in her mind to Asphodel for not lending the man a coat or sash before dragging him to the event. She wondered exactly how the merchant fared with her father. Marietta looked the the pale gold in her glass a while, likely listening to Aleksandr's response before she would tilt her head, chin to the left and down and her fore forward and to the right, before stepping off to walk. She did not imply the formal need of his arm in the process but if he offered it she would take it rather automatically and detached, well conditioned to the act. "Come, their disposition sours when their feet start to ache."

She was speaking of the colorful train of women behind her who were indeed bored standing where they were. While Marietta was on the stand they were free to actually enjoy the party. Free to roam, free to dance and flirt with the rich-blooded men. Like they do any time the court found an excuse for a party. As if they all didn't live together... In a snide sort of way, they were relishing in the fact that they have already been with one of the potential new kings and the princess they served would be second to them in something. Facts that Marietta was well aware of and frankly didn't care...

They were muttering aghast at this all the while. Marietta didn't simply... talk with anyone, she participated, at best.

"Possibly.."

He couldn't comment on what he might have done or not, as he didn't remember it, if there was anything to remember at all. She apparently was not content to leave him be yet, though, asking him more questions that seemed trivial to the point that he wondered why she would even ask it to start with, unable to fathom why she would find these questions interesting in the slightest, mentally shrugging it off and responding to the question and accompanying remark about his clothing.

"Six full moons or so. These are almost all the clothes I have. I don't have the money for fancy clothing, and I won't take what I didn't earn. Had the old man not dragged me with him, I had no intention of attending anyway."

It was the truth - he didn't see the point in showing up to an event he didn't observe, not part of the culture and not really feeling a connection to it. He didn't hold any ill sentiment towards anyone else for enjoying it, but it just felt like something a little alien to him, it didn't feel like home. As she bade him walk with her, he nodded and followed suit, not extending an arm to her, assuming that if she required such shepherding she would have made it known to him directly. He mused on her her words about the gaggle getting unpleasant when their feet started to ache, wondering idly if they had to spend much time on their feet at all. Probably too busy sitting and looking wealthy to warrant things like work or physical exertion that wasn't in a bed.

"Pity..." was her only remark as he explained that he wouldn't have come if he hadn't been as he described it, dragged.  Her attention again drifted to the colors in the sky, a feat of nature that occurred only once a year. There were lots of stories and assumptions about its existence. Fortune tellers banked on it, promising that they could hear and decipher the song within the colorful staves. Whimsical lies, likely, but it is not as though the Skald could be reached directly for confirmation. She kept the slow march going and still having not sipped from the glass she made him go fetch. Keeping him with her served only three purposes. The first was he bought her time to stake out her escape route. The second was the irritation of her coterie. Finally... the fact that he was skald-writ, that really did interest her to some extent.

While it was true that nobodies could become leaders of distinction no matter their root, the social workings that had remained unchanged in the centuries had created a sort of cycle where while there may have been Skald-written guild leaders that met with the King... the children were all she had real contact with. Each generation isolated to each other, lead along by the previous. Aleksandr was the only 'stranger' she had gotten to directly meet and it was as if years of lore had suddenly been proven true before her eyes.

Still, what could one even begin to ask of them? He in particular didn't remember his time before. There was nothing left to ask, as she was not particularly interested in what he was doing now, which seemed to be eternal grunt work in order to pay off a growing debt based around his food and lodgings. Her attention drifted to the gate at the far end of the acreage, the one that lead to the bridge that connected the property to the city proper. She should wait until people would start to leave in droves... unless something more viable came up. Her biggest obstacle would be her ever present party, but they were easily distracted with their penchant for gaiety rather than duty. The plan was coming together, and she would use the seed she had planted a while ago... the one real fainting spell was her excuse for many an event and ticket for early exit.

Unless he had spoken, all there was between them was the not-as-quiet-as-they-think gossip behind them, and Marietta soon put an end to that if only temporarily when her gaze pushed to the corner of her eye at him. "What would you rather be doing, if you prefer not to enjoy the annual anomaly? Further, what would you prefer to do in this new chapter of yours... to what end do you seek?"

"I don't know. I don't know who I used to be, what I was good at. I would say that not many people find themselves in this situation, but apparently in this place, a number of people do."

He shrugged broadly at her, having no idea what he wanted to do or indeed, what he was capable of doing. He'd tried various basic activities, but found that none of them were something excelled at, even as he didn't seem awful at them either. That and most of his time was spent lugging around various goods as part of his job, which left a lot less time to get other things done. He heard the less than subtle gossiping from the gaggle that accompanied her highness, but it was so much twittering in his ears, he tuned it out for the worthless hearsay it likely was.

"I suppose I will have to find what I want to do first, trite as it is...Highness."

"Indeed, indeed," she said as almost part of a song. Her attention was on him again... her gaze boring into him, through him, past him. She was planning something for sure before the slightest smirk crested the right corner of her thin lips. It faded as quickly as it had come along. The princess turned her face away as she continued their little procession of beauties along the shell path. The snow sparkled the way she liked it, and she never once noticed the cold or the fog of breath from any of them. The amount of people here, however, there was a sort of collective warmth... with steam rising from the harder workers-- the performers feverishly playing their music, the dancers that accompanied them. And... the tell tale rise of where some hidden rendezvous were not so unknown as they thought themselves. She was making her way back to the stage where she was meant to stand and continue the greeting line despite how at some point there would probably be more people leaving than coming in.

"This a grand place to discover it, so many artisans and paths of life cross here on this night. Many guild members, I am sure, each could tell you of lands you may find of interest or sparks of knowledge that could draw you in the way a good book or serial play might. Of course... there is no story without a little... drama."

It was only a few more feet before she swayed and paused, placing the back of her free hand gingerly against her brow. There was a conditioned reaction from her clique, clearly containing their delight. Marietta had successfully used the excuse enough to earn all of them their separate freedoms, it was what they expected rather than holding any real concern for her well being. Had she been more boy-minded as them, she may have even been spited for the dizzy spells as some sort of play for attention.

That simple touch to her forehead was all she had done, however, catching herself from any embarrassing falls or public need to rely on anyone but herself, but took things slow enough as she tested the waters of the reactions around her.As someone who had been on stage from the moment of her conception, she acted well, her pale face tired and a little pained while still stoic enough as expected of someone in her power. "Aleksandr... I hope you will thank your mentor for allowing my borrowing of your fine company. I release you to enjoy the rest of this Skald-borne night as you see fit, as it is your tale to tell."

Her eyes gave a slow bat, furthering her attempt to sell the image that she was unexpectedly frail and weak for whatever reasons nonexistent.

He could feel the scalding gaze she was pointing at him, but he chose to not react to it, feeling this was just part of dealing with the monarchy and he should probably expect this sort of thing. Was there a monarchy, where ever he had originally come from? He didn't know, just felt vaguely uneasy about it, there was no memory there to draw on, so he instead turned his attention to her highness as she spoke again about how there were many people here, and the implication of many opportunities too, although that still didn't help him figure out who he had been... Did he still even have the talents or knowledge of his former self? The Skald seemed to enjoy existential crises, if this was a common method of drafting in new people.

"Perhaps, Highness."

He considered that, only have a few moments before the woman next to him swayed a little, and he felt his pulse jump in his veins and stepped in to intercept her fall. He felt intensely aware all of a sudden, everything slowing down in his mind almost to a crawl, aware of her highness in the midst of some sort of fainting spell. He could see her gaggle, standing there uselessly, feeling the facade that masked their amusement with a surprising well of contempt, his gaze darting around the immediate area, looking for... What was he looking for? The behaviour came on immediately and forcefully, and he had to stop for a moment to collect himself, which luckily coincided with her highness seeming to regain her composure before she actually fainted out.

Shortly after that she was dismissing him, and part of him felt a rush of relief, while another part felt a vague suspicion that he couldn't place, and couldn't rationalise the context of either, even to himself. She went through a rather flowery litany to dismiss him and he inclined his head to her as he made to leave, not sure how to feel about this whole strange chain of events.

"I will be sure to convey as much, highness, thank you."

He peeled away from her highness and her gaggle of smiling assassins and drifted away towards the masses, before he was accosted by a garrulous presence that he knew even without looking at the man, at this point. He heaved a soft sigh and braced himself for whatever was coming next - a delightful discussion with the actual monarch, perhaps? A lengthy discourse with a pack mule, maybe.

"Aaaaaaah, back, I see. How was that for you? Tell me about it, especially any unusual details...

And so Aleksandr was led off by the old man, who reached out and deftly liberated another fluted glass of champagne on his way past a server, finishing it and putting it on the tray of another attendant as he took a second glass, not breaking his stride.

For a second she judged him with the corner of her eye, committing him to memory for whatever reason, the tenseness about him had changed from the apprehensive fidget of someone who didn't want to be here to something more cultivated and serious two very different displays of duty. Nothing new, but still something to watch. She didn't look back as she left with her train of handmaidens, leading the way back to the stage to rejoin her family momentarily.  As before a nearby suitor in far too much damask in an unsuitable color stepped up to take her by the arm up the steps and delivering her to her proper little perch. A tilt of her head in the usual and lightest show of thanks as he kissed her knuckles before she turned and curtsied, first to her father and then to the 'audience'. Just a little while longer.

"This Song Coil has been as lovely as I have ever seen one and it has been perfect poetry to have shared it with such... characters. The conflict within requires that, with much regret, I not finish this night here among you but end the verse as it is." She finished it with a smile a little more akin to the predator knowing it had caught its prey in a trap than anything motherly or sweet. It was a very short statement, flowery and gibberish perhaps to those strangers not so well adapted to the heavily arts-based culture. "May we all be found worthy by The Skald by our stories lived, and if we are not, let us take pride in the fact that pieces of pointillism is made of each individual speck."

There was a hand on her shoulder, which moved to take her hand. Her attention drifted to follow the action noting the proud father showing public affection to help seal the deal and ease the fact that she was essentially excusing herself. It worked, she was free... and this brought a giddy relief in her as she gave another double curtsy and lead her posse away to ready her for bed as they have done all the many nights before.

The routine would be the same: she stood there while they undressed her and redressed her, trotting in and out as they put things away and brought things in. She was especially patient tonight, almost as if that near-fainting spell wasn't so fake. There was a light chatter, the topic focusing on the bold old merchant dropping a stranger of all people in their laps, and how Marietta didn't dump him as soon as possible. One of the quieter ones, less shallow than the rest turned the attention away from it to something more interesting to the rest: did Marietta have a preference of the potential suitors she'd actually end up with?

The princess noted the gleaming in a few eyes, the particular ones who felt like they had to 'stick it to her' in any way they could. They were looking for weak points they could stick thorns into. Why, she never could figure out. Boredom, likely... they were all very bored here in their gilded cage. Marietta threw them a bone, and a man to wolves. "Archibald is refined enough, certainly."

Ding! She could practically hear their ideas ping around between them. Archie was likely to become the sudden favorite when they returned. Perhaps she would give him more 'points' for handling it with grace and the idea of watching to see how he would react crossed her mind, distracting her from her original objective. The ladies departed, distracted by their new prospect and she started an internal countdown. She had no way of telling when they would have gotten back to the party, her window didn't even overlook it. In her night gown she left her room and slipped to the wardrobe, fishing about for the set she had tucked away with the spring outfits which were far too light in cloth to even be considered in this season. It wasn't complete, she hadn't been able to figure out how to get a hold of things she had liked from the uniforms of the militants, like good sturdy boots for what would likely be a long march for her.

She fussed with the eye-and-hooks on the sky blue corset she had dismembered from the rest of its gown with a hasty knife some nights before, picked for the ease in which the netted lace would rip free, and with careful practice she had been able to singe off the messy strands, some better done than others. A grunt and wince as she forced the tight and stiff material of the bustier around her ribs with all the fasteners secured. Then bent forward to adjust her breasts within, making sure they were positioned more prominently and comfortably in each cup. The skirt had been something a little more difficult as most items were full dresses that hung from the the top portion in various settings... so she settled for ripping apart a black petticoat to a more interesting length, one that would allow her to be flexible as originally she planned on hijacking one of the stabled mounts. With some remaining fabric she stuffed various jeweled items she could sell for money and put the tiny crown on her wrist as if it were simply a bangle with spikes on one side, a signet ring joined her hand as proof of her heritage, opposite of the gold lattice band that had started all of this.

Shoes. For now she would have to wear the heeled ankle boots. The heels were wide enough that she could possibly run if necessary, good stability.... not that it would be comfortable or effective to. She looked around to determine if she needed anything else and aside from a hairbrush and a vial and applicator of mascara that she stuffed in the 'bag' with the shiny accessories, she called it time. Out the door, down the hall...  this would be the quietest night to run. All any guards or servants had to worry about today was what was going on outside of the building... and so she proceeded rather boldly to the veranda.

Here she had to be careful. Here she climbed over the stone 'fence' into the garden yard where the people were, her eyes set on the various crowds. She couldn't mingle or she'd be caught. The Italian cypress, though... those would do. The shadow of them long and dark, the plant itself wide enough to hide her if she stood behind.... and there were rows and rows of them by the wall that surrounded this place. She had an acre or more to cross just to get to that bridge, however.... the fire in her was a back up plan. If push came to shove she would light the cold, cause a frenzy and vanish with the panic. It was looking more reasonable however as the sheer size of her property-- most of which she hadn't explored since she was imbued with responsibility-preparations-- was daunting now.
