The whole process might have been too personal for the average person, but Levente was nothing if not pragmatic - the girl was a walking (crawling?) mass of filth, and seemed mentally incapable of making that assessment herself. For her health, and for a chance at identifying her and finding someone who might be able to explain how she had ended up like this and then, what might be done, if anything, to remedy it. He stared at the scruffy thing, with vivid eyes and a hair colour that was definitely a far cry from natural as he understood it, and wondered if this was perhaps some sort of magic he was witnessing, a slight frown as she nearly snapped off his fingers again - that was something he was going to have to break her of, if only someone didn't take her for some mad woman, or possessed lunatic and try to kill her off. It wasn't especially likely, but it wasn't impossible either, and besides that, the better she behaved, the easier this would be for everyone involved.

"Ah! No, I don't think so... Whatever your name is."

She seemed about ready to roll around in the dirt again, and he wasn't about to allow that. He'd watched her skitter around doing whatever else, but he wasn't going to watch her get dirty again just after he'd gotten her clean. He grabbed a fistful of hair, close to the roots to get her back under control, although he made sure not to tug hard enough to cause undue discomfort or pain. Well, it was time to get her indoors for a while, then, so he could appreciate the work he'd done getting her clean for at least a little while before she went and undid it all in five minutes of idiocy.

"Hmmm, I wonder if you've drank anything that doesn't constitute dirty or parasite-ridden recently... Should probably make some sort of tonic to deal with that too. Come then, dog-girl-thing, let us get you some water, and away from the dirt for a while."

It did not have to hurt for her to yelp a response to the surprise rein-in, her attention whipping back to him with confused eyes. It was effective though, as though this had been a tactic used on her before. There was a expectant wiggle of her hips as though she were wagging her tail, eyes up at him from her knee-high position, hearing him verbalize toward her though lacking a full range of understanding of his words. She liked the attention all the same though, going as far as answering him with a rumbling noise from her throat and more isolated wiggling.

Any parasites she may have contracted were unseen as of yet, any that were external were likely taken care of (at least temporarily) from the initial bath. As a wild scavenger she had certainly eaten her share of raw meat, which had its own iffy characteristics and consequences and she certainly had that tireless hunger and lack of good weight as a symptom. She would not have lasted very long on her own this way, likely to be taken out by nature running its preventable course. However, it was a good question on how long she had been out and about there... though the history of the shepherd's problems with her was probably a good indication.

He signaled it was time to go back inside and as ungainly as she moved, she went along like a pet, to continue her wild run indoors instead when he wasn't directly giving her attention as he was at this moment. Or if she no longer felt wet and frisky-cold.

Well, that seemed to work, grabbing her hair got her attention, even if it felt undignified and improper to handle her in this fashion. But she seemed to believe she was a dog, or other similar animal, so he was having to change his tactics for interaction to get her to behave herself, the weirdness of the situation far from lost on him. He led her in to his house, and promptly found a cloth so he could dry her off so she didn't track water all over his house, or cover his furnishings in it, such as they were.

"Okay, now you're something approaching clean, let's look at you."

He sat her down in front of him as he too sat in a chair, tilting her chin up. He checked her eyes, that strange, vivid colour was indication of something inhuman about her, as was the lavender hair, but other than that, she was human. Or at least on the outside she was as human as they came, sat there naked in front of him, it was hard not to notice how human she looked. He tilted her head this way and that, and ran fingers through her hair, feeling for cuts or scrapes that he might have missed while cleaning her, or have opened up in the process of getting her clean. He took her hands and looked at those too, checking the range of motion in her fingers, as walking around like she had been would have left some sort of mark if it had been a long time.

He defeated her hyperactive itchings by not letting her free for very long and she took to the towel rubbing in all the best ways with her body stiffing up and wriggling madly with him as she built up some sort of estatic-static that resulted in a massive and vibrating shake of her body when he was done. Throughout there had been a happy sort of grumbling, throaty and perfectly unique to her, leaving her grinning with fully colored cheeks as he sat her down for inspection.

She was certainly human, in looks and otherwise, despite how she sat there in the position of a bull frog... she had developed as much as she would, her hips likely only the result of her being underweight, as overall she was very thin and long in body. Callouses like thick traction pads had developed over the fat at the base of her toes and fingers, as well on the smaller appendages themselves. Small superficial splinters she hadn't complained about were present, some he'd might have to cut out as the soak didn't do a thing for it. Her joints seemed fair, however, possibly even better than average due to the adapted stress. Though that could change in an instant, and something only time would tell either of them if arthritis would kick in early in her years to come or not.

Hidden in the lavender hair had been a few sore spots, where she had scratched feverishly an itch in the same spot... or the bloodied scab from where sweat settled on the nape of her neck. There was something else too, a dark line just off center and along the crown of her head. It was thick and smooth, creating a design that would either have to be painstakingly mapped out... or that patch of hair shaved.

Aqua eyes continued to be settled on him, her waistline flexing as she 'wagged her tail'.

He looked her over, mentally remarking that while she was malnourished, and mentally infirm, she had done rather well for herself, all things considered. She was also never going to be much good for child rearing, the malnourishment having done its damage to her in the form of her slight figure, and no doubt in other internal ways too... Maybe that was for the best. It also probably explained why she wasn't toting around a brood of equally damaged children, a thought he quickly to put to one side due to its bleak tone. He instead focused on her hands, running fingers over hers, feeling for those splinters and and any other swelling of damage as the girl grinned at him like an idiot.

"I have no idea how you have lasted this long, this well... A few unpleasant drinks or capsules and a few good meals, and you'll likely be in pretty good condition."

He lifted his hands to her head now, tilting her head again, coming back to her head as the logical source of an injury that had made her this way. He gently probed around the scratches, fingers running through her hair until he noticed the irregularity, not recognising it for all the things it might possibly be, just something that stood out in itself. He pawed through her hair gingerly for a little while longer before.

"Hmmm, hopefully someone knows who or what you are, so we can establish that and get you home."

He reached out and rubbed her head idly, the gesture executed without really thinking about it, before he paused and realised he'd treated her like what she seemed to believe she was.

"...Huh."

Bleak probably didn't even begin to cover the possibilities and questions that came with it. Not that she could tell him a story to confirm or deny anything he might have inferred or liked to know. Some she may not even be able to tell herself.

She was a little uneasy the way she sat with him holding her hands, eventually struggling with him to get them back so she could place them back on the floor. The mention of 'meals' got her busy-bodied with excitement though. Of course, she was a black hole with those dried fruits he had brought along, he might not have too hard of a time feeding her the various medications he may feel necessary. Then again, like any pet, she could suddenly become very picky.

As he roamed his hands through her hair again she made her happy moans and groans, enjoying the attention, eyes up at him as eventually he was settling into just petting her while he got lost in thought over something else. "Wuff."

"Hmmm, wuff."

He exhaled a sigh and tried to imagine how he was going to deal with this, once again thinking it might have been a bad idea to drag her back here. He was sure there would be some nonsense about the Skald willing this, but he was far too busy to have his schedule ruined by a particularly frivolous embodiment of impulse to a musical backdrop, be it real or otherwise. He stood slowly and stretched his arms above his head, before patting her head idly and drifting through his home to his bed, pulling out a book from a rather rough looking set of shelves, before sagging on to his bed to read for a while.

He leafed through it, making note of a few things he would have to make in order to get dog-girl back to something approaching hygienic enough for polite society, and for her own lifespan. After that, he'd need to start asking some questions, and maybe see if he could get her dressed in something, so if he met whoever was her family, it would be a little less awkward, for them and him. How much less awkward when she was crawling around like a dog was anyone's guess, but it would be better for him at least, rather than receive questions about why he had the girl in his home, naked, acting like a dog.

"RrrRrrrRrr!" A little more animation erupted from her as he 'talked back', but it faltered as he got up and meandered his tired way to his den. She, having no sense of boundary yet/still hopped right on in with him, flopping herself across his legs. This would do for a time before she found herself uncomfortable and would remove herself to the side where she'd curl up with her knees to her chest and her back pressed to his calves, leaving him to read in relative peace. Nonexistent was a tail, which at this moment would have been sweeping impatiently.

She adapted to a home far too easily. This was a return to status quo.

He was vaguely amused at her response, and wondered idly, if through enough of that kind of interaction she might find her way back to something that would make sense to communicate with - something to consider, at least. He raised a brow as she followed him and made herself comfortable not only on his bed, but over his legs - well if there was any doubt about how sincere this act was, it was dissolving rather rapidly now. Really he should have told her to get off the bed, being as she believed she was a dog, but she wasn't actually a dog, so he wasn't going to make her sleep on the floor, and this was the only bed he had, given that he received company infrequently, and wanted it to hang around even less.

"You will be the first woman in this bed since I arrived in this place, I am sure there is some sort of joke, loaded with innuendo or otherwise, that could be had from that."

She decided she wasn't comfortable enough, and moved and then flopped down again next to him, reaching out to pat her head idly as consternation crossed his features. Was this the norm for her? Was she fishing for attention of some kind? He had no idea what to do with most 'normal' people, but one that was a person that actually seemed to believe she was something else, that was an oddity too far for him to interpret. As such he read for a while, and let her sit there like a fleshy ornament, as seemed to be her want.

Her body position even here was dog like, showing off a trained-in flexibility developed by her determination to be something she wasn't. However, her body would have other thoughts about remaining in this position. In sleep she'd toss and turn, unfolding and refolding as necessary... but that's not unusual... some animals did like to lay flat out on their sides, some curled up.

Sea-green eyes kept on him as she gave him a broken sounding whine, as though she were trying to make a particular pitch her throat wasn't capable of and defaulting to some sort of staccato and airy sort of squeak. She couldn't read to know what literature was in his hand, nor was she angled properly for it, just down at his side just far enough for his hand to be able to rest on her head. The idle petting had her close her eyes after a while, rather content despite his concerns and trains of thought. She hadn't a clue of his joke, either, it going above her head as any sort of innuendo in front of a very small child who still hadn't even grasped the concept that such things exist.

It was like watching a child trying to settle, he decided - she rolled around and tossed and turned without seeming to get any closer to a comfortable position. And while she covered every position from the awkward to the tantalising and scandalous, she still seemed to be unable to settle and he wondered how she ever managed to sleep if she'd been outside for a long time - it was not comfortable out there at all. The petting seemed to make her cease her awkward sounding whining, and once again he wondered what had made her like this - if it was the alleged Skald's doing, his sense of humour was rather cruel, or whatever other pronoun the being chose to adopt.

"Hmmm? What is it.... We need a name for you, I can't keep referring to you vaguely like this."

His glance had fallen on her as she stared at him intently like she wanted something, although he had no idea what that was as of course, she wouldn't or couldn't tell him. Was she hungry, or pining for more attention? Or perhaps trying to convey some more important information -like the reason for her being like this - but was unable to? That was a worrying though, a soft sigh of frustration escaping him as he reached out and idly patted her again, putting down the book for now.

"This would be much easier if you could talk."

"Ahhhhn...." She yawned broadly, her head tilting back as if it would simply unfold like a fan. Up she got again so she could stretch without leaving her spot, body rocking backwards as she promptly sticks her bottom up in the air in the process of making herself a triangle. Yogis had called the position 'downward dog' for good reason. The force of the stretch caused her small muscles to visibly twitch right up into a full body shiver that she shook out before folding herself up again and giving him a settled and bleary-eyed stare.

Unseen, imaginary ears twitched at his words. It would be easier if she could talk indeed. Though she hadn't much to say anyway... not about what he'd like to know and probably things he would not want to hear once he did. It was abnormal, but to her it was simply life. This was normal, she was a dog. A lost pet. A pack mate without a pack. An omega with no alpha. Perfectly normal.

The majority of her response to this one-sided dialog was just to stretch and yawn at him, a grunt from him in response as he leaned back against the headboard of his bed and leafed through his book idly. He read a few pages on unguents and tonics that would help clear up whatever unpleasant things she had contracted while she was out in the wild, idly remarking in his own mind that a full treatment of these things would have cost her quite a lot if she was someone who had come seeking his services - the time taken to gather the materials alone would have cost. But she was a broken thing that believed herself a dog, so she was getting it all at the cost of having to sit there long enough to take the draughts, or being rubbed with whatever ointment happened to be necessary. He looked to her for a time and considered, before speaking to her again, reaching out a hand idly as she settled to pat her head.

"I'll call you Adeen for now, it's better than 'you' or 'dog' at least, even if you think dog would probably be a compliment. For now though, I think I am going to rest. With any luck, you will not destroy my home. Tomorrow we will see about getting you actually clean, and finding you something closer to a life."

He closed his book and set it to one side on a bedside table, and a snap of his fingers made the source of illumination in his room go cold and still, letting the gradually approaching dark take hold. He turned on to his side, feeling the weight of the girl sat on the bed too, and idly wondered when the last time was, that he had shared a bed with someone. He didn't recall anything prior to his waking here, nothing but a deep pain in his heart, and his arm that no medicine had fixed, he simply had to wait for it to go away. He dismissed it as muscle pains, or some sort of seasonal condition he didn't remember from a previous life, but he knew there was the dreams, of fire and pain and horrible burning. He hoped tonight would not be one of those nights. He eventually fell to sleep, and stayed still for a while, before he started to stir, and made vaguely distressed noises as a vision of a bright, white light sank in to his dreams. He didn't understand the nature of that light, least of all in his dreaming state, he just knew that he feared the light, that it signified some end that made him tremble and mumble with distress as he turned in his sleep.

Anwen, or Adeen as she was now to be known as, was a very good dog for what it was worth. She had her high energy moments, but they were balanced by the sort of quick and chill understanding of an adapted house pet. When he made the light of his hovel go out and rolled over she took that for what it was and wriggled as close as she could get, likely curled up in the crook of his legs and slept too.

At least, until one such attentiveness stirred her, concerned by his struggles in the night. Being so close to him his movements woke her up and she got up on fours to crawl over him, hopping over as he turned. If that hadn't risen him out of whatever nightmare he was having, then she'd nuzzle her nose against his cheek before dragging her tongue on his skin instead with slow laps of good will. If that didn't work, she'd get a little creative by nibbling the lobe of his ear and giving it a little playful tug, squeaky-growl and all.

He felt a dim pressure, and perceived a light that was so intense as to be blinding. A sense of scalding, searing leaped up his arm and in his mind he screamed as the burning ate clean through his arm, scalding and eating and-

He woke with a start as he felt the pressure on his ear, eyes wide and wild for a few moments before he realised he was awake again. The nightmare faded away almost immediately and he was just left with a sense of foreboding, and sweat rolling down his brow as his breathing started to settle in, reaching out a hand to put a finger to her nose to stop her fussing at him. He sat there in bed for a while, rubbing his face and waiting for his heart beat to slow down again, mentally chiding himself for such childish nonsense, and letting it bother him to this extent, turning his attention to Anwen and patting her head idly before he started to settle again.

"Thank you, Adeen. Back to sleep, it is going to be a long day tomorrow, I think... All of them are going to be long while we work out what and who you are..."

Anwen kept at her attempts at soothing and nurturing him out of his panic, licking at his finger when he put it to her nose to stop her and leaning in with a little asserted force that went no further while he sat there and wiped his face. Her nose twitched as she sniffed and snuffled, taking in the musk of his sweat. She still had no idea what was going on with him, and had she known he was scolding himself she might have reminded him that he couldn't really control what happened when he was asleep. Of course, she was just a dog and therefore could only react to his outside reactions, acutely aware of his discomfort and upset.

She whined a bit when he patted her, rolling her head around his wrist to ask for cheek rubs in addition to the pats before he settled. She would not return to near his legs but stay up by his torso more prominently and partially on him as if the shared warmth would melt away the nightmares. Aquamarine eyes fixated on him so earnestly, waiting to determine if his sleep would be a good sleep or a bad sleep she would need to rescue him from again as her unofficial duty.

His sleep was no less disturbed this time, but he didn't respond to it so dramatically this time, still in his sleep, recalling nothing of the things that prowled in his mind when he later woke. He opened his eyes the smallest amount, seeing his arm laid out before him, except it was grey and dull, looking like smoke-stained glass from a fire. He blinked slowly, and like that, his arm was back to normal, the moment put to one side as a phenomenon of the waking mind, that same arm lifted to rub his eyes as he stared blearily out at the world. He felt like he hadn't slept much at all, and also quickly became aware of the person/dog/delete as applicable that was also still on his bed - had she been there the whole evening? Once again he was made to think of how absurd this situation was as he considered getting up and doing something approximating productivity.

She certainly was there all night, and managed to get in some shut eye once she was sure he was. Any slight movement had disturbed her, rousing her from her light sleep. Typical of a creature for survival, though, to be able to rest and be aware enough to bounce up and flee as needed.

She knew her place was at the bottom of many totem poles. She had been taught that first and foremost and never had the will or drive to question it or to try and climb rank. It didn't seem to matter to her and she did just fine as the dirt under the shoe of others.

The girl felt his slight movement as he woke, heart rate or body temperature shifting just so subtly in the right way to get her moving, and before long she was nearly nose to nose with him, blinking and patiently waiting for him to.... do anything. "Awf," she huffed.

He blinked a few times as he fought off sleep, and then found himself with a face full of... Well, Anwen's face. She made a noise that he assumed was her being authentically 'dog' and he rolled on to his back, stretching and yawning a colossal yawn before he actually sat up in bed, and realising that now he was going to get up, he was going to have to deal with them both being in a state of undress, having shrugged off whatever clothing he still had on about the time he was too hot and slightly feverish from the stress of the nightmares. It shouldn't have mattered, as she was so mentally removed from being a person that normal social etiquette didn't apply - she herself was naked.

But it still did matter in some way to him, and as such he stayed where he was a little longer, waiting for some of those more fun morning occurrences to settle before he got up to do anything. He had been too tired to really think about what it meant to have her in here, when he had gone to bed, but now he was waking up it was rather more obvious what kind of complications it caused. There was of course the realisation that he was going to have to start asking questions of... Well, almost anyone he could find to try and identify where this peculiar girl came from. That made him want to stay in bed even more.

The more he moved, the more it signified as him being awake and so she let out another excited 'Awf' as she hopped mostly-nimbly over his body upon his rolling over, likely bouncing on top of his lap without a second thought. It was all true that she didn't even consider how he had shed his clothes in attempt to lower his body temperature-- her own body heat having added to that on top of everything.

Her eyes didn't stray far from his face while she pestered him to get up. But before long the ever-empty pit would call her attention away from him with a clumsy leap off the bed in search of whatever food he might have stored away. Dried foods like the fruit he had coaxed her by were harder for her to smell, given she didn't actually have the sensory ability of the very animal she thought she were... so her finding food was more of a hasty rummaging like a hobo through guarded trash.

His thoughts were his, all his realizations strictly his own, for she had no care in the world. Taking to being a house pet about as readily as if she had been already born and raised into it. Or as if she had already been here for several months prior to this morning.

"Yes, awf."

He grumbled groggily, rubbing sleep from his eyes and letting out a low groan as he stretched his arms high above his head, mentally cursing himself for not anticipating this part of dog-girl's act. There was likely going to be a lot of this pestering and clambering around in the future - he would have to find a way to prevent that, and while the notion of 'training' her seemed abhorrent for what was meant to be a normal person, that was what it might actually boil down to given her mental peculiarities. He took the time to briefly get himself dressed and then made sure she wasn't destroying something valuable, or dangerous, or a combination of the two in her quest to do whatever dog things she believed she should be doing.

He considered how to approach feeding her for a time, but eventually he decided to give that a miss for now, and get to the more practical matter of making her eat something so she was less emaciated and perhaps a little easier to identify once she had filled out to a more healthy proportion. He agonised over it for a time, not wanting to give her something too rich in case she was ill because of it - even if she had scarfed a generous bag of dried fruit the previous day - before he settled on cutting her a wedge of bread and offering it to her - it was pretty calorie-laden stuff, and surely a lot better for her than whatever she had been rummaging for in the great outdoors, being neither nimble predator nor capable of accessing the higher mental functions she should have access to.

"What shall we do with you today, I wonder...?"

"Awf! Awf!" Her tail wagged a mile minute, and would have caused its own fluffy brand of chaos thumping heavily on anything in its way be it his foot, the bed, a table, something fragile. She had run off ahead to forage while he was getting dressed and when he found her she had managed to open a lower cabinet with her face. It took the entirety of what time she had alone to rub her face against the crest of the door to work it up enough to stick her nose in, then her face and an arm. There was probably nothing in there worth finding, but perhaps things he wouldn't want her into all the same.

Ears perked as she heard him arrive and she popped her head out and grinned foolishly proud of herself for finding absolutely nothing. It just meant it was one less place to check for her, and for him-- though he knew where everything was in his organized cave of wood. She was at his heels as soon as he was rummaging for food, debating on what to give her and settling on something simple to keep her stomach settled. Though despite her malnourished state she seemed to be as much of energetic bunny as she were a black hole for those dried fruit treats yesterday. The dog-girl bounced at his heel before taking the bread with her mouth. A feisty snatch of it, not at all patient or remembering of any behavioral corrections that occurred just yesterday.

Anwen sat in that bullfrog position, her head tilted back as she tried to engorge on the bread, working it down her throat with constant and animated chewing, growling and grumbling with relative difficulty but obvious delight at getting food. Comically swaying her head side to side in the process.

She paid no mind to him chatting at her... having little say in what will be done with her anyway. The dog-girl went with the flow, and the current flow was to be examined by this scientist, or to be fixed by him.

"Out."

He flicked her nose as he found her attempting to rummage around, although he considered letting her rummage for a little while, before settling on punishing her. If she was going to believe she was a dog, then he would have to set the boundaries for one too. There was also the fact that finding something that accidentally caused her to poison herself to death would be a poor way to try and teach her a lesson, and there was plenty enough in this place that would succeed in ending her life if she just scarfed it down.

He closed the cabinet and made a mental note to consider getting proper locks put on the lower doors to stop her doing that again in the future. She once again pretty much inhaled the food she was given, and he once again came to the conclusion that if anything was going to kill her off, it was going to be her blind hunger, or perhaps greed, more pointedly. The snatching was something that he was going to have to break her of, as well - she wasn't actually a dog, so he wasn't risking serious injury. But if she was going to stay here, she was going to get at least a little closer to being the person she was supposed to be, and not whatever she was now.

"Hmmm, I suppose I'm going to have to go and ask around town now, and see if anyone knows where you came from. This presents me with a problem, as I am sure you will have this place destroyed by the time I return. On the other hand, if I take you with me, the authorities are likely to have us both taken away..."

He regarded her, expecting a blank, wide-eyed blink as he spoke to her, although he was getting another idea now. If he assumed someone had done this to her, somehow, then maybe there was a degree of conditioning that he hadn't already exploited. He put away anything else that would distract her, and then, he just walked across the room, knowing that she would follow simply because there was the chance of food if she did.

"Stay."

There, just one word, but the results could be quite significant depending on how she reacted. The next twenty minutes or so was spent seeing if she comprehended, or complied with various commands that most dogs were familiar with. He was hoping he could get to the point where she would understand that she was to stay here, and not wreck the place, but he didn't hope for too much.

A whiny groan came from closed mouth from his corrections, but he was both forgotten and forgiven when she had dedicated her near-choking focus to the bread wedge he had given her soon after. It kept her occupied well into his outspoken thoughts, lively but blank sea-colored eyes watching his pale lips move. She heard him, as she always did but she could only pick out random words and unreliably at best. Sometimes she understood and sometimes she did not, as he would find out as he drilled her with various commands to see what would stick. They were few and far between, and if he ran through them multiple times he'd find that she just wasn't very disciplined to them.

In truth she was just confused why he'd ask her to do them again. Her body language was incomplete, involuntarily relying on extensions that didn't exist, offering only a hunched back when there should be a tail between her legs or a craned neck when her ears should be big and bold as they stood at attention.

As far as ever understanding what he was leading up to? No, not at all. She lived too in the moment to comprehend the future that he was leaving to try and solve the mystery without incriminating himself in the process. All the while she reacted on any thought that happened to form in her little pea brain. When one did.
