PostSubject: Discarded Stray   Wed Nov 30, 2016 11:11 pm

The sheep had been terrorized enough between the working dogs herding them at the beck of their masters and the mysterious not-wolf that had the sheepherder on edge. It hadn't been spotted, or rather even if it had been spotted few would get around to believing it. It was a creature of madness, human shaped and running awkwardly on all fours in a slower gangling pace that never got it anywhere successful in its many attempts.

For now the tired girl sat dirty and tired in the bushes at an elevation that let her look out over the alpine village, those many strange red roofs that harbored some familiarity to her, a sense of relief and comfort in the sight of civilization. She didn't know why, or she was feeling what she was feeling. In all actuality she thought herself quite the little dog. None of the animals shared that opinion, but she did. She was downright sure she had all the bits and pieces of one. Right down to the primal desire to chase things as they ran. And boy did those sheep run. She wasn't as good as the two dogs she normally saw work the field, but she gave it her best shot.

After a stretch with her bottom high in the air, fingers unfurling and grasping at fallen twigs and leaves, she made her move. Further into the woods and away from the grassy area the herders used for their sheep and cows.

Levente was happy to have a challenge, and this whole situation with a strange sort of 'wolf' allowed him several opportunities to try out some things that people would not normally allow him to indulge in. So he had turned up with a satchel full of miscellaneous tonics and curious mixtures and wandered off in to the woods. At the edge of the woods he'd wandered back and forth spraying a jar of clear fluid over the treeline and nearby, something with a noxious scent that mostly couldn't be picked up by your average person. That was his prototype deterrent for thing that shouldn't be here, and with any luck that would show some clear results which would vindicate him with the populace and allow him to sell things other than pretty smells and a few more questionable liquids for people wanting something a little more exciting.

He trudged through the woods, picking his way past scrub and tangles of fallen branches, a glass vial clutched in his hand, his thumb rolling along the stopper idly. If it was wolves, they'd scare off easily enough with an explosion - something loud and bright, they would scatter quickly enough. A wolf that was person-shaped though, that was an academic curiosity worth investigating, although he did wonder if someone had been playing games at the expense of the local livestock owners - the things that straddled the line between beast and man were not usually bad at being a beast, and not usually shy about causing trouble.

People in the woods was not an unusual sight. She had seen hunters and their trained companions skulk through, usually in the early mornings or as late as dusk. Their critters didn't mind her, she was not their quarry. Though the hunters were having trouble with some of their smaller traps... but unlike the sheep, they were not as troubled. It was not uncommon for larger predators to take advantage of the caught rabbits, but it was part of how Anwen had survived too. After all, she could not take down a deer herself.

She stayed away from all of them, especially the wood cutters. She stayed out of sight of the herbalists scrounging for plants, and of the scientists and their studies. When she spotted one dumping something at the next tree line she figured it was food, bait of some sort for the animals (and therefore her) but was baffled when she explored it after he left and found nothing of interest. It was like he just dumped some stale rainwater at best. But then he went deeper into the woods and she followed for a short while. Walks weren't half as interesting as whatever he dumped earlier, which was nothing, so that said... quite a lot.

Anwen stopped by one of the rougher-barked trees and leaned her temple into it, nodding her head to get a scratch on an itch that had sparked up, giving him plenty of time to further the distance between them.

So far he'd not found much of anything - for all the fuss this had caused, there wasn't much of a sign of anything here, certainly no beings of madness skulking around in the undergrowth. There didn't even seem to be actual wolves anywhere near by either, although that was probably a good thing as he didn't really want to deal with them. He stopped and slowly turned around on the spot, seeing nothing but a whole bunch of trees and miscellaneous foliage and little else but for the occasional bird overhead. Lifting a hand to brush hair from his face, he stared at his surroundings with a slight frown of dissatisfaction - it was perhaps expected that he'd get nothing useful done today, but it was still annoying, disappointing to subject himself to, a protracted exhalation following as he propped himself against a tree and considered how long it was worth his while to spend here, producing a bag of dried fruit and chewing it thoughtfully. Maybe he needed to work on some sort of thing to attract creatures so he could then figure out how to repel them...

She had lost him pretty easily, having no heightened senses to track by and she had all but forgotten him as she had done the others from the village in the valley. It took a little talent and a little luck to have stayed so elusive, what with her hair as purple as lavender flowers standing out in the dense greenery of the forest, but that may have been in part due to how dirty she was. Dirt was like a second skin, smudged right into her flesh and matting up her hair with thick chunks of mud from the rains. Sores were apparent but had gone unnoticed by her as well.

In her own quest for food, having learned of a few eat-this-not-that rules from the animals that lived there, she was perusing the bushes for viable berries, hopping along on all fours with the awkwardness of a walking rabbit with little worry or concerned for being spotted in this area. As far as she knew, things were too quiet and normal for there to be any workers about. That is, until she had rounded one log and startled-- he almost blended in leaning like that. Aqua eyes focused with all the same surprise on him... and his food.

He was about ready to call it a day and go back to what he had been doing - peddling various stimulants to people with more money than sense, or more boredom than sense at least. It was a stable but rather tedious line of work to maintain, a begrudging chew of a chunk of dried fruit as he admitted to himself that tedious or not, he needed money to live. The moment he was about to push away from the tree to leave, something crept out from behind the tree, and he froze on instinct, wondering if he'd finally found one of those wolves they talked about, prepared to have a long internal monologue about irony. What he had actually found though, was about one hundred and fifty pounds of dirt, with a girl somewhere underneath it, blinking owlishly at her, blinking at him, blinking at her. Was this the dreaded not-wolf? A girl (he assumed?) covered in dirt and looking to have gone feral? People were ridiculous sometimes.

Her gaze towards his food was incredibly telegraphed, like little paths of fire went from her eyes to his food directly, to make sure it was pointed out. He raised a brow, and fished out a chunk of the dried fruit and extended his hand towards her slowly - this would count as his good deed for the day, surely.

"Here, you must be hungry. What are you doing out here in the woods like this? Most everyone gets something, and is pointed to town..."

The line fell to his hand as he held the food out, her head bobbing a little as she sniffed in his direction. Not that she could smell dried fruit from this distance even. But she pressed forward and stopped. After all, she was feral and not wild. She had at some point in her life been around others, though it was early on and she knew very well that she had been left at this point and unwanted by her 'pack'. A pack that lived in a smaller settlement near this one. So it wasn't entirely lost to her that he could be being kind.

Though she wasn't sure what he meant by everyone getting something, being pointed to town and whatnot, she did understand him. Her head tilted from one side to the other, staring down her nose almost cross eyed at the piece in his hand. She was naive, having never been attacked or trapped in her time here, and if he wanted her gone he could have waved his arms angrily and yelled to quite easily send her away. Her eyes eventually drifted upward to him while her mouth parted...

...she leaned in....

...and snatched at the food with a big chomp of her teeth.

As she snuffled around and peered at him, he was afforded a moment of confusion. He had expected her to just take it out of his hands and probably inhale the food directly, but instead she appeared to be doing something else entirely. Was she suspicious of his offer? Not entirely unwarranted, but her silence on the matter of her being here didn't really help with much of anything beyond what he already knew. What was interesting however was the little display as she leaaaaaaaaned over, mouth open, and then chomped at the dried fruit, his fingers withdrawn quickly as not to lose them. The whole interaction, short as it was, got the cogs of his mind spinning as he looked down at the individual with peculiar hair (or he was sure it was peculiar, but he couldn't tell if she was covered in grime and plant matter that just made her hair look strange) and produced another piece of fruit and again extended his hand towards her, an idea starting to brew in his mind.

"Can you tell me your name?"

The treat lasted about as long as expected, by the time he had recovered from the momentary fear for his fingers she had swallowed and eyeballing him for more. Food was a good medium for communication with many things. The domestication of many working animals had happened over food, after all, and she was going to be no different. But when he asked for a name she just stared at the fruit.

Her naked bottom plopped onto the ground, bare feet flat and shoulder width apart with her hands resting in between them. It was meant to be a proper sit for a dog, but she looked more like a big bull frog instead. Her invisible tail swishing away nice and slow. The delusion went far for her, she was absolutely sure she could hear the leaves being swept aside and could feel the bump of twigs.

No response, just looking at the fruit, well that was not surprising if she was really hungry, but the non-verbal communication was very strange - was she mute? That would be perfect, finding a feral girl who can't tell him anything about her situation, making it almost impossible to resolve. When she hunkered down though, the animal behaviour was obvious (as was the fact she was indeed a 'she' at this point, her completely naked form rather putting any ambiguity to rest when she sat like this) and it caused him to pause for thought again. This was looking to be their 'not-wolf' and a fearsome beast she was, it seemed, more fruit extended to her to keep her pliant while he decided what to do with her. It was not desirable, but he couldn't really just leave her out here, a dirty, misbegotten thing that was probably going to starve or freeze to death one of these days. Her behaviour was a curiosity, and if nothing else, he could observe that while he tried to figure out if she had any family to return her to.

"You're going to make this difficult, aren't you?"

He continued this game of feeding her and seeing how she reacted to it, eventually stopping for a while to see what behaviour it elicited from her, see how far the animal went and how much person was in there still. How did this sort of thing even happen? A real life 'raised by wolves' child? Some magic gone awry? So many questions, and none of them were going to be answered by her.

Each time he offered her food she would snatch at it, greedily and lacking any proper manners to feed from a person's hands, but like a pigeon to the bird seed lady she stayed right where she was, expecting more as though the man was this bottomless well of the stuff. The silence between them carried about as much as the previous analogy. When he stopped she waited, mostly patient with her head nodding with sniffs to reassure that the food was still there, a tilt of the head about why he stopped.

There was a sad truth in the lack of answers he would get, but some things were perhaps better off left unknown or forgotten. But she did understand him. She did hear him.

"Wroof," she chuffed. It was certainly a human's interpretation of the sound she should be making, the sound she believed she was making.

And when he finally got a response from her, it was like an imitation of a dog, what a child might think one sounded like when mimicking such an animal. That was confusing - was she deliberately affecting this manner as some sort of ruse, then? It didn't seem likely, as he'd gotten close, he could reach out and touch her now, so whatever gambit required such a thing would be sprung already, so his mind went back to curse, or some sort of head injury. How bothersome.

"Yes, troublesome in the extreme I wager... Can't reasonably leave you out here though for the beasts, both human and otherwise, to find."

He contemplatively gave her another piece of fruit, down to a couple of pieces now - and begrudgingly realising this would have lasted him some time if he hadn't fed it to the weird bottomless pit before him - and wondering how he was going to get her out of the woods without getting bitten in the process.

She snatched at this piece as well, signifying that this was more of a manners issue than a fear one. Fear was there certainly, but her stomach's desires overrode that well enough. As a stray her fears were more centered around the fact that she was aware that she was not wanted in most areas. Just feral enough to survive on her own, but domestic enough to remember what having a master was like, a home was like. Still, she was aware of any movements by him and grabbing her could result in getting bit in defense. Unseen by him and all her ears were up and her tail swished waiting for the next piece and a yawning, whining, sound in response to his outward musings.

The girl paused her begging to twist herself like an expert contortionist and awkwardly scratch her head with her foot. It was neither as powerful or as fast-kicking as a normal animal's... after all while her toe- and fingernails had been grown out a little, they weren't the claws of an animal's. The whole thing had the grace of a horse scratching its ear with one of its hind. An amusing marvel, but little else. She rolled back into a more balanced sitting position and stared at him rather blankly. Waiting.

Of course she gave him nothing to go on, he hadn't known what else he might expect really, but if he'd tried repeatedly, he'd eliminated the likelihood that she would talk - even if she was capable, at this point she clearly wasn't willing to which made the end result the same. As such he fell back to what to do about her, as she was an ill match for almost any wild animal, and a naked woman crawling around in the woods was entirely too tempting a target for the morally flexible people of the world.

"Well, you don't talk, but maybe you understand better than you speak... Come with me?"

He took a few tentative steps from the tree, just to see her reaction, taking cues from people who avoided dealing with strays - they ignored them cause if you gave them too much attention they would linger. So he supposed he was taking a stray home? Surely there would be a karmic balancing for this at some point, no doubt after she had eaten his furniture and destroyed whatever she couldn't eat... Assuming he even got that far to start with.

Her head tilted like an owl's, this way and that, as she stared at him and his words. Her expression had taken on a hint of curiosity in response, rather than the excited patience that had been steadily shown up until now. She followed him with her face as he moved away, but otherwise made little movement to follow him initially.

Thoughts worked their way through each twist and turn of her mind, relating past with the present. She couldn't come up with anything to dissuade her from going along for now. The desire for more and easy food was a siren's call in itself. She approached him, dirty and mangy, before flopping unceremoniously at his feet and rolling over belly-up. She wiggled there with an arched back, scratching her shoulder blades on the forest floor and creating even more of a mess with her matted hair, pressing the back of her head into the act as she gave her skull a good itching, too. She growled and crooned during the act before she was back on all fours again, looking up at him with eyes of aqua.

Now what? Her human ear touched her shoulder again.

She sat there and stared at him for a little while, and followed him with her gaze, but didn't seem like she was going to commit to going anywhere just now, which made him start to consider other options. Eventually though, she actually got up and moved closer, only to flop on her back and wriggle around - yes, this was the kind of behaviour that was going to get her in to a very unpleasant situation if the wrong person - or thing - happened to come along. Well, he'd gotten her to move a little, so he gave her a little more of his food -having to ration it out now as it was quickly dwindling and he had to get the strange creature quite a distance before that food ran out.

The thought presented another issue to him - he was going to have to get her past people eventually, and that was a recipe for some interesting and undesirable interactions. So, a long walk around the edges of the settlement it was, then - luckily, he lived on the edges already, so he could probably stuff her through a gate before anyone was the wiser. After that, he could figure out what to do with her. And so assuming he managed to keep her attention that long, he would lead her to the point where they crested on the edge of a settlement, his home a place flanked by rather unwelcoming looking fences, and he stared at the gate and just opened it and stepped through it, to see if the addled woman would follow suit, or if he was going to have to get creative with this.

She followed easily enough, coaxed along with another distraction of food if she got hesitant or wander-y. The way she moved was uncomfortable to look at at times, her body contorted in a way that was awkward for how she was built, her arms a little shorter than her legs giving her downhill sort of gait. She didn't seem to notice it as anyone else had they tried the same method. But it accented how problematic she'd be in public, bare and dirty on top of that.

Leaving the forest had been the first obstacle, and the edge of the township was the next. Unseen by him, as they didn't exist, her ears stood up with attention, looking at the village she hadn't been to in a long long while, if at all. She had been in a village before, it could be assumed she started at one somewhere. Whether she was raised by wolves or not was another matter entirely. But she remembered buildings. She remembered people, and that's why she took to him easily enough and his offers of food.

Fences themselves were barriers, so she had little opinion on them besides the slight concern of a glorified cage. Her head canted to the side as he tried leading her into a gate, but trotted in shortly after, drifting away to sniff at things as she had done here and there along the way, snuffling sounds faint but present.

Not that she could actually smell anything of note, nothing he couldn't smell himself. But she peeled away from him, as though she knew when he shut that gate shew as confined in here. It was pretty status quo, though he'd not know that much about her.

Over all, it had been a lot easier than he had expected it to be, she had been rather cooperative for what was clearly a horrendously damaged person, the particulars of that were still something he was trying to work out. The really interesting part though, was when he finally looped all the way back around to his home, and when presented with the gate and fencing, she sort of stared a little bit, and then plodded in, and then sort of got situated in this new locale. She had stayed pretty close the whole way, but now she was here....Curious, very curious.

He opened the door to his home and discarded the various items belted to his waist, and put down container with the single piece of dried fruit left in it -she had scarfed the whole bad across the duration of the trip, it was like feeding a hole in the ground - and then he had heaved a sigh. What he was going to do with her now, he hadn't really planned that far, but someone might know her, take her in so she'd not be a walking casualty for wild animals, or a casualty of another kind for anyone that came across an addled naked girl and saw an opportunity. He supposed he should get her something to clean herself.. Assuming she wasn't quite so addled as to not comprehend that any more... Then things were going to get a mite more difficult and awkward...

It was coming back to her, in a way. Her new distraction was curiosity itself as she ambled about investigating his home, going through the door as he opened it and running rampant into this new abode, investigating her way around and making a general mess of things in the process as she hopped from chair to table, made a flying leap onto a counter, or in general rolled around in his bed disrupting the sheets. Unless he made motions to stop her, she didn't spend too long in this activity and would eventually settle herself down to a seated position. Like any new pet attentive to its new owner it wasn't likely to just go onto her own routine straight off the bat.

Her eyes to the endless, or what she thought was endless, supplier of food. Particularly where he constantly got it from and without a second thought-- she was very much an action-taker than a thinker-- she popped herself up with hands on the counter or table or wherever he had set it upon and stretched her chin as far as possible to try and get at it. All the while very proud of herself for showing how self-sufficient she can be, which translated into a heavy wagging of her tail.... which in turn translated to the wiggling twitches of her hips as she mimicked the sort of dog that shook its entire haunches in happiness. It was a skill many human-human girls would have loved to have, surely. Some even made money on their ability to do so, in the form of belly dancing or otherwise with such elaborate and quick shimmying. Luck or resilience was her greatest trait, to have not or survived the encounters Levente worried about for her.

He was busy with cleaning himself up for a time, so he didn't really pro-actively stop her careening around his home, which he really should have. What he did stop however, was the advance of her face across the counter towards his almost empty bag of dried fruit, reaching out to prod her nose and push her back down to the ground. It was strange to treat a person like this, but if this was what she believed was correct, the skewed logic made it a little easier.

"No."

She seemed to sort of understand him, so maybe that would be enough, or maybe the way he said it, or his body language or something. He didn't know, he wasn't all that interested in animal husbandry, so conditioning a dog to do something was not his area of expertise. Conditioning a person who thought they were a dog, or a wolf, or a possum, or... Something, was even less in his area. First thing's first, he was going to have to get her clean, so someone might recognise her as more than a scruffy mound of dirt, and that was going to be tedious, he imagined.

"Somehow, I'm going to have to get you clean..."

Her reaction was nothing short of expected, shrinking back and wrinkling her nose at the pressing on it, Anwen gazed up at him dolefully. She couldn't act further with him staring right at her as he did, at least not immediately. When she felt he was focused more in thought than what his eyes were doing she'd try again, consequence or not, stretching herself and trying to make minimal movements in the process... as if movement was what was going to draw his notice this whole time. She was Anwen Dog retrieving the treasure from the Table of Levente.

As par the course most of his talking to her would be left to thinking-out-loud as she wasn't about to answer him, especially with her focus on getting more food. Cleaning her up was going to be exactly how he was thinking it would be. Matted hair so dull and frayed it might be easier to cut it, no longer holding the vibrant shade of lavender it used to. Her skin was tan and roughed up from time out in the wild, scabs and patches of repair with even more dirt ground in. Her eyes were clear at least, a bright and energetic aqua.... and very very up to no good, innocently enough.

She seemed to have stopped for the time, so he got occupied with locating things to clean her with - scissors or a razor were likely needed to cut out some of that hair, fit for nothing as it was, caked in grime. He was going to probably need some of these oils he kept around, too - to get her clean in the more mundane sense, and to sterilise whatever injuries she might have sustained. He returned from his musing and gathering items to find her stretched out again, trying to reach the fruit, a sigh or irritation - she certainly kept this persona going very well if this wasn't all there was to her.

"Hey!"

He reached out with his free hand and flicked her nose, and then pulled her down from the counter again if that was required, putting a bunch of stuff down on the counter to man-handle her back to the ground. He was starting to wonder if this was a mistake - what if no one claimed her (a telling way to think about it, already)? He would be stuck with a dog that wasn't a dog, which he certainly couldn't take outside without some very raised eyebrows. Well, worry about that in due time, yes? He picked up the fruit and took it with him, that would keep her attention as he drew some water in to a bucket, and using a simple alchemical doodad, made the water heat up - cleaning her with cold water was going to be a waste of time, with all that dirt. After that it was grab a brush and some stringent cleaning soaps, and once he got her coaxed over here with it, he could attempt to clean her outside, where it didn't matter what got covered in the dirt from the ensuing headache he was about to undertake.

Another very doleful look on her face as she was punished and he was making it perfectly clear he wanted her on the ground. She responded rather unexpectedly well behaved for some mutt he found in the woods, going down with little more than awkward wriggling that served the purpose of making sure she was belly down in the process. It was mostly unnecessary, as his goal was simply to get her down from where she wasn't supposed to be.

She was soon rewarded for her beggary, as he used the carrot-on-a-stick method of getting her to come along with him yet again. The dog-girl plopped into a frog-like sit with her right human ear touching her shoulder of the same side as she watched him prepare. Her little nose twitching in the process, as if the receptors there were strong enough to tell her what he was doing... with that food.

She was relatively well-behaved, and relatively simple too, following happily if it meant a swing at getting some food from him, a simplicity that he was very grateful for as -for the first time, at least- he wasn't going to have to fight just to get her close. Once he'd gotten her to settle and lie down through the promise of food, he put a hand on her to hold her in place, and used the bait and switch moment to start scrubbing the grubby little creature.

"This is going to be pretty undignified for a girl, but luckily you appear to think you are a dog of some sort, so we'll work out the fine details of this another time."

The whole process was incredibly clinical and not at all tantalising for him, having to scrub off who knew how many layers various grime and dirt to try and find a person underneath. He should have maybe got her in to a bath, but he had no bath that he wanted ruined forever when he couldn't clean it as effectively as her - layers of dead skin would come off, a layer of a copper tub was an entirely different matter. It was an awkward situation for both of them, but eventually he had managed to get her scrubbed clean, and with the aid of some oils and multiple washes, he was able to save most of her hair, the strange colour of it adding another level of oddness to the girl's existence. As a sort of consolation, he let her have that last piece of fruit now, and patted her head with a tired sigh.

"There... That will have to do."

Her confusion carried her on until he started dousing her in water. She didn't like this, not because she didn't like getting wet or was harassed in any way, but because it was sudden and unexplained (it wasn't raining, this wasn't a swim, etc). She was frowning, looking very betrayed as he held her wriggling self down and scrubbed her all over, letting out the occasional whimpering squeak and whine as if that would change his mind on the ordeal.

His efforts were rewarded in time, however, with some dark scratches that refused to empty much like some of the local inventors' hands hardened and greased. They were few and far for her and less of a concern than the general sores from being a grimy dirty little thing. The applied astringents and general scrubbing making her yelp and try and squirm away from him-- in a burst of power that if he hadn't been splashed and wet before now he certainly was now. His fingers on her scalp had made her putty in his hands, while the rubbing on her belly riled her up pleasantly, kicking a foot like a rabbit thumping danger to relatives.

But when all was said and done was a soaked and shaking girl with earth-worn skin, aqua eyes, and a rather soft shade of lavender locks. At least she stood out enough that if someone was looking for her, better or worse, she'd be easily found. The reward was the best part, though, and like the times before she might have nearly taken his fingers with the treat in her eagerness to receive it.

He was no longer keeping her there after that, however... and so he'd soon have a very excited and free naked dog-brained girl running around and rubbing up against any fabric she can find... or simply rolling in the dirt and grass to get dry and get out the frisky jitters brought on from being wet and chilly. She was fast, considering.
